Soroptimist International Medway and Maidstone celebrates 80 years!
Medway and Maidstone Soroptimists were proud to celebrate their 80th anniversary this year.
The Medway Club was founded on 3rd June 1946. Very early on, the Club became involved in caring about the elderly in our community. The pinnacle of our service to the elderly was the purchase of 257 Napier Road which became our own Soroptimist House.
In 1959 a ‘daughter’ Club was formed in Maidstone. Then, in March 2020, they took the difficult decision to close after celebrating 60 years of service. SI Medway was pleased to welcome 12 of their members who chose to transfer. An application was then made for the club name to change to SI Medway and Maidstone to reflect the club's wider membership and this was approved in May 2020.
The club celebrated its 80th birthday with a weekend full of activities in June 2026. These included a visit from members of SI Osnabruck, Germany which maintains a close friendship with the club; an afternoon tea event attended by members and their visitors; Sunday lunch; and a visit to the Suffragist Sensory Garden in Rochester.
More information and news about the club can be found on their webpage -https://sigbi.org/medway-maidstone/
